A simple dinner in Berlin transforms into a studio session, which in turn evolves into a track, which sets the spark for what has now materialized as one of the most highly anticipated albums of late. These were the forces which turned a casual evening into an artistic crossroads for Jerome Sydenham (Ibadan Records), AYBEE (Deepblak Recordings), and Ron Trent (Prescription/Future Vision Records).
S.A.T short for Sydenham AYBEE, and Trent brings together the creative energies of three of underground dance music’s notable stalwarts. Jerome Sydenham long since etched into dance music history with his iconic NY based Ibadan Records responsible for some of the most memorable tunes of the last 20 years from a list of Kerri Chandler, Joe Claussell, Dennis Ferrer and many many others. Ron Trent another legendary icon whom’s distinguished discography spans 20 plus years, and whose Prescription label also sits atop the pantheon of dance music’s most esteemed imprints. AYBEE a Trent discovery in 2001 has since gone on to establish himself as one of the most critically acclaimed, and forward pushing producers of the last plus decade with his Deepblak imprint producing a genre defiant, labeless sound that continues break new ground in the electronic spectrum.
With the mood in Jerome Sydenham’s Berlin studio loose, and organic the trio set out to produce an album full of the elements they love about the dance-floor experience. After three weeks of literally living in the studio the S.A.T album has emerged.
A Chandelier designed from the lyrics of the greatest Hip Hop record of all time Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message” ?? Created by Berlin based Ebon Heath as part of a limited collection. When I was asked to do sound design for one of the 3 videos displaying the chandelier i was honored. When he told me he wanted a Sun Ra type vibe…well… i think you know what my face did …

Deepblak’s left, and right arm AYBEE along with Afrikan Sciences offer up an homage to one of the greatest musical innovators of the 20th Century, in Miles Davis. “Sketches of Space” is comprised of LIVE jam sessions recorded over a 3 year span, and two countries . The project though named after Mile’s classic “Sketches of Spain” is not dedicated to any of Miles’s work specifically, but honoring his pioneering spirit from which this project drew fuel.
Particularly Davis’s spirit in his continual search for new sound. This is search led him into the jazz fusion era, birthing a movement of stunning contributions by jazz giants that began to explore the improvisational possibilities of electronic instruments. This era in particular, along with it’s ethos has played a critical role in Deepblak’s creative direction over the years. AYBEE along with Afsci have remained steadfast in pushing themselves sonically, and have drawn an innumerable amount of inspiration from the free flowing vibes of the 70’s jazz fusion era.
“Sketches of Space” is by no means a Jazz album, nor is it a remixing or recreation of Miles’ music. Though it is with him in mind that the two producers entered into the Sketches jam-sessions over two continents (Oakland, US/Berlin DE) to record. Wild, Cosmic, and smooth at times “Sketches” represents the free flowing experimentation that Deepblak as a label cherishes so dearly.
Four classic Deepblak tracks previously only on digital see a vinyl release via Dubbyman’s Deep Explorer imprint. Includes the much heralded AYBEE remix of Dozie’s – Sensuality.

The Deepblak Chief Alchemist kicks of 2014 with his “22 Meters EP”. This is his first ep since relocating to Berlin 2012, and reflects the different modes of the dancefloor experience as filtered thru AYBEE’s metronome. Driving, atmospheric, and at times euphoric AYBEE melds these narratives into an EP that carries the emotional colors of an album. “22 Meters” also sees the vinyl release of “Akiara” a long standing Deepblak favorite only previously available digitally.
DEEPBLAK Label Nite in Berlin. It’s funny to think that we sat together in Afrikan Sciences apt. in Oakland in 2006 as a small group of sonic misfits trying to figure out a way to perform together. Life has a funny way leading paths away then back together, but here we found ourselves in my new home of Berlin for the 1st DEEPBLAK Label Night. It was a truly magical evening, and a cap to what has been an amazing year for DEEPBLAK. To be able to merge my worlds in a night of sonic travels, was something i will always cherish. Afrikan Sciences, and Damon Bell in from Oakland, along with my Berlin massive of Loganic & the mad scientist that is Onyx Ashanti… simply beautiful.
Smiles and vibes in the air…definitely a historic night. To ALL DEEPBLAK massive worldwide your energy/love was present. It’s so tough to put a whole evening into context, but here is a snapshot. Also an amazing glimpse at the end of the vid of Onyx’s stunning live performance. ~ A

Bay Area producer Armon Bazile has pushed a steadfast brand of deep house since the millennium, working with labels of Prescription and Yoruba’s stature, releasing a string of releases on the forward-thinking labels like Washington State’s Further Records, and drawing an Oakland-based collective of like-minded artists into his own Deepblak imprint.
This special art & sound 12″ conveys his meditative, spiritual approach, drawing on a blend of cosmic and spiritual sonics — bringing to mind detroit techno, german space-rock, Sun Ra — and resolutely innovative, rhythm-heavy dance tracks.
