DEEPBLAK | Off The Grid [ 02 ] AFRIKAN SCIENCES

Welcome to DEEPBLAK’s podcast series “Off The Grid”. OTG was created to feature the LIVE side of performance via sets from the DEEPBLAK cast, and cohorts. No rules just the artist, their gear, and whatever trajectory they decide to explore. The expectation is to have no expectation simply ride.

OTG [02] is provided by DEEPBLAK Rhythm Czar Eric Porter aka Afrikan Sciences. With his 2nd LP “Theta Wave Brain Sync” slated for Oct. 2013 he provides us with triumphant travel piloted by his unique metronome. If you are new to Afrikan Sciences then welcome. If you are already initiated then you know the score. Hold tight as we visit the distant lands that reside deep within your mind.

Deepblak | Summer Releases and Movementz…

Much to cover so i will get right to it. We are half way through Deepblak’s 10th year, and i have had little time to breathe. Here’s what we have upcoming. June 7th the “AYBEE – 11:11 EP (DBR-V007)” hits stores on vinyl. I just received the Testpress from the “o1o – A Futurespective EP (FUR009)” coming on Further Records realease date (tba). July brings Afrikan Sciences much heralded project to vinyl with the “Means and Way’s EP (DBR-V008) “ with additional remixes. In August Malena Perez and AYBEE debut as the group “Traveling Phoenix” to drop the “The Ascenion EP (DBR-D030)”. As i type i am finalizing a project with Miles Sagnia for his Atmospheric Existence Label which should be hitting stores mid-summer.

September brings Damon Bell with his “Kush Musik Wax EP (DBR-V009)” also with additional remixes. Rounding out September is the “10 Years of Deepblak CD (DBR-CD001)” celebrating some of Deepblak’s pivotal releases along with a few new gems. Deep breath…also be on the lookout for an AYBEE remix coming on Tsuba for Ethyl & Huxley ‘Reflexions’, and the long awaited Blak Punk Soundsystem (Ron Trent & AYBEE) EP on Future Vision. Ok now that i got that all out…back to work. Blessings to ALL

Afrikan Sciences - Means and Ways

[DBR-D029] Afrikan Sciences – Means and Ways LP

We are proud to play host to the mighty Afrikan Sciences debut album “Means and Ways”. After producing some of the most cosmic soul juggling tracks of the last decade Afrikan Sciences has finally woven together a full length. Already receiving early run from likes of Gilles Peterson Means and Ways is a watermark of rhythmic freedom. True to previous Afrikan Sciences escapades rhythmic rules are re-programmed, and tuned to cosmic frequencies. These are sounds that you need not attempt to control. Ease yourself open your mind, and let the imagination take the wheel. We hope you Enjoy.

Douglass’ preoccupation with rhythm, however, fixates on the oddities—the mutations, the dualities and instances of bare collision. His hoarded beats are gleaned from a whirlwind of origins—west London broken beat, the east coast’s ’90s house, ’40s jazz, indigenous African and Latin rhythms—but they’re deployed concurrently and unexpectedly, with cross-beats and displacement used as accents in his own pidgin dialect. ~ Resident Advisor

Afrikan Sciences (Eric Douglas Porter) stands solidly as one of the most innovative producers to surface on the west coast in near time. The Deepblak Co-Head affectionately titled the Rhythm Czar has steadily become one of the most well respected creators in Electronic music. Ever the artist Eric maintains a low profile staying true to his craftsmanship. Along with his releases on Deepblak his music has found it’s way on to other labels such as UK based Bitasweet (Bugz In The Attic), Puerto Rico based Amalgama, German based Rubaiyat, and Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint. As a student of the rhythmic arts, Eric is also an accomplished DJ/Live Performer having opened shows for acts like Outkast, Rakim, Dead Prez, played in the Band of nu soul icon Julie Dexter, appeared in clubs like the BlueNote/New York & Jazzcafe/London. His project Student Body Presents recently caught a lot of attention with the “afro punk” track “boxes” which was released on the “Black Rock Coaltion” CD (New York), and as a 7inch on Rubaiyat.

– “ This is not your usual electronica album: it’s fresh, exciting & brave enough to follow a different way; deepness galore!” Georgia Ann Muldrow (Los Angeles – Stones Throw)

In 2011 Porter released his benchmark album “Means and Ways” LP which brought him universal praise as one of the ground breaking artists/albums of the year.
