AYBEE | i-D Magazine Mix

Promoting stillness through sound, Deepblak Recordings is the visionary label releasing left-of-field soundscapes and entering subliminal voids with their omnipotent rhythm.

Placing an emphasis on dance-floor inspired soul, Aybee describes the paths he uses to discover new talent as “a natural evolution of musical dialogue, that takes place organically between a family of artists.” | Read full interview >

AYBEE VLOG | 7900 | DJ QU in SF

Recently got a chance to catch the bredren DJ QU (Strength Music, NJ/NY) in his 1st SF appearance. I am a big fan of what QU has been doing with his productions really carving out an interesting space for his sound within the Deephouse world. While many are attracted to the dark elements that QU laces his joints with I am attracted to the consistent swing he applies. The groove never let’s you forget he’s a dancer 1st. Respect to Jeremy and crew for bringing Qu westward. Here are a few moments from the eve…

The New York trip…

The trip to New York was no different than any of my other trips there….simply magical. The opportunity catch up, build, and make new friends was a tremendous blessing. In this era of social networking, and thumb based communication there is nothing like sitting in front of someone sharing ideas, food, and laughter. With the mighty Jus-Ed as my host little could go wrong as I was exposed to some of Connecticut’s most beautiful landscapes. To wrap up the weekend at the helm of one NYC’s most fabled Sound-System’s was an experience not soon to be forgotten. Respect to Jus-Ed, Anthony Parasole, Fred P., DJ Qu, Levon Vincent, Joey, Ian Rock, Lola & Spider, and all those who came out. I appreciate all the conversations as it was truly time well spent. Until next time…

AYBEE

AYBEE

Releasing music under a wide range of monikers (Orion 70, o1o, Prof Delacroix) Producer/DJ/Filmmaker AYBEE (Armon Bazile) has garnered respect from all corners of the electronic music spectrum. With a versatility that is genre defiant AYBEE traverses Techno, House, Experimental, and Hip-Hop seamlessly while consistently pushing a forward leaning sound tinged with Soul.

A product of Oakland, CA, AYBEE comes from a steep family tradition of music, innovation, and artistic exploration. Seeds planted by his New Orleans based grandfather who ran a small Jazz label, and uncle who ran a short lived disco imprint “Armour” in the late 70’s. It was the uplifting power of music, and dance that pushed AYBEE to embark on the exploration of himself as an artist in the early 00’s.

In 2001 AYBEE launched Deepblak Recordings as a creative outlet for his music. Ultimately catching the attention of Legendary House DJ/Producer Ron Trent. This chance meeting led to Trent signing AYBEE to the iconic Prescription Records imprint and releasing his first 12”. Soon after AYBEE along with Trent would come together to co-found Prescription sub-label Future Vision.

Never one to stand still AYBEE has gone on to establish himself as one of the most innovative, and versatile producers around with more than a decade plus worth projects to his credit. These included his ground-breaking Ancient Tones LP (Further Records), his critically acclaimed “WORLDS LP” (Deepblak), and his collaborative LP “Sketches Of Space” with label mate Afrikan Sciences. Always bringing forward leaning rhythms to bare AYBEE’s sound palette keeps evolving in the pursuit of the deeper depths of the dance experience.

Deepblak’s ethos of meshing forward leaning production with boundless rhythmic exploration have been key tenets in development of the label. Maintaining a fresh balance between eclecticism, and what has playfully come to be described as “Free Techno”, Deepblak’s releases have found themselves championed by some of the most distinguished selectors worldwide. With openness as the mandate AYBEE has also branched out to work with other prominent labels such as; Sound Of Speed (Japan), Further Records, Atjazz Record Co., Burek, Soul People Music, Yoruba, Deeply Rooted, Soul Jazz, and Dogmatik to name a few.

Based in Berlin since 2012 he continues to evolve his sound, and creative reach via DJ, LIVE performance, and Film. Much like his sound he is always seeking an amplified dialogue with the music, and the dancer. The pursuit of a deeper understanding of this relationship serves as constant guide while presenting the music. With an impeccable body of work behind him, and new projects constantly emerging AYBEE readily pushes his sound into destinations uncharted. With a love of musical expression firmly at the helm he views his mission as an artist as simple; “Create sonic situations for us to move, and to be moved.”
